Installing Homebrew Apps on your Palm Pre or Palm Pixi
So you just bought a Palm Pre and are wondering “ How do I install all of these homebrew apps I see on some of my favorite palm pre websites?” Well, my friend, let me tell you it’s a simple process. I, Jason Chirempes, will have you up and running in no time at all. Before I get started I would like to thank precentral.net for all of the information that helped me write this install guide. There is a load of information and wealth inside the forum.
The instructions I have below are for a Windows (PC) computer. The instructions should also work for a Mac since all the programs needed work on both platforms. If more information is need please check out the thread listed below.
So let’s get started shall we.
Step 1.
We first need to make sure your computer is running the lasted version of Java. By going to www.java.com you can test your java to make sure you are up to date. If not please download the latest version and move on to step 2.
Step 2.
Now comes the fun part. You will need to download the WebOS Quick Install program from www.precentral.net. Click on the link here WebOS Quick Install to install. Jason Robitaille made the program. So let’s give the man his props for making a great program. After the program has finished downloading please open it up. You will then be asked if you want to download WebOS doctor. Just say yes! After the program is done downloading you will see another window open up. Please set this to USB device. If everything was done correctly you should see the WebOS Quick Install main screen.

Step 3.
Ok now let’s grab your Palm Pre. We are going to put your Palm Pre into developer mode. In card view type
“upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart” Type it just like I wrote it. Yes it is the old school Contra code. If done correctly you should see the developer mode slide up from the bottom of the screen. Tap on the icon. Now select developer mode on. You will then be prompted to restart your Palm Pre. Do so.
Step 4.
Once your Palm Pre has restarted plug your Pre into your computer using your USB cord. Next select “Just Charge” on your Pre. After this is complete head back to your desktop on your PC ( or Mac). With the WebOS Quick Install still up click on the disk icon which is located below the plus and minus buttons.
If you get "No Device Detected", go to File >> Options >> Attemp Novacom (re)installation
Now you will see a list. Choose the WebOS Interals Feed (all) from the drop down menu list at the top. You will first need to select Package Manager Service. (This needs to be installed First!!!!!).Check mark the box next to this package. Then press download.

Now you should see the package manager on the original webos Quick Install page. Now click on Install!

After the package is installed your phone will slow down while the java on your phone restarts. Don’t freak out
Now go back to the disk icon and load up the WebOS Internals Feed (all) again. This time select Preware . Now go ahead and download the file, then install like you did for the package manager.

After you install the Preware App your all set!!!!
Open up the Preware App and browse all of the homebrew apps. Check out The Mx Web blog to learn about all of the goodies inside the Preware App. We will also discuss how you install apps from Preware.
If more help is needed please check out the links below. Or shoot us an email. You can find The Mx Web's email on the contact page.

I realy like your cool topic! Could you accomplish the college essay as example? Because I do know that a good essay writing service is able accomplish well researched research papers of perfect quality.
To be honest, precentral really neeeds a scrubbing imho.
A lot of the threadnames actually don’t really let you know what the thread is really about (“Sprint and Pre”, “Am I the only one?”, “Suppose…..”, “strangest thing is happening…..”) and a lot of the threads are in the wrong subforum. This might also be the reason why some threads just get opened over and over again (e.g. bypassing the initial profile screen).
Also: a lot of “Good post” stuff.
I’d rather have one thread too much deleted and make the forum more read/searchable for everybody than not deleting that stuff and have the board suffocate
When they move a thread to another topic it deletes it then posts a copy. You won’t find it even under you posts or threads anymore.
“Palm has said that they intend to launch a device with no physical keyboard and just an on-screen one.”
Could you please provide your source for this quote? I haven’t heard any official information from Palm on this.
Palm has never officially announced this but if you read Palm webOS by Mitch Allen (Palm’s CTO) he talks about making your apps compatible for all types of input including on-screen keyboards. So while no official announcement was made it will happen. Like I said this article has some speculation in it because we are talking about an operating system coming out in the future. But thank you for giving me the chance to clarify this.
interesting. I wonder how credible Mitch Allen is on this topic matter.
Also, I’d have to believe palm has plans to do a virtual keyboard at some point
Yeah, I doubt Palm has plans for this in the near future because it seems like they seem dedicated to getting there two current devices(Pre, and Pixi) or and variations (Pre Plus, Pixi Plus) to all of the networks first. But with competition from the iphone, nexus one, and the storm (although now much competition can the storm make) Palm must have plans at some point for a virtual keyboard device. The real question is whether or not it will be built in to the OS for just the touchscreen device or available to all through the app catalog.

Is this an original comparison or did you copy and best the cells from other sources. If it is original, great article. It was treat to read. As a self-proclaimed smartphone expert on you reminded me of a thing or two
Thank you, its original.

Is this Still coming tonight? it am at schoTMol and want to be entertained
I am visiting your blog whenever I have some time left
You forgot to mention that Palm OS has millions of applications over the years which can be run on the on device emulator “Classic”
While that is cool, I feel like the idea of that never seemed to attractive. Of course I used winmo before my Pre so I never grew attached to a single Palm OS application.
cool idea, i’m in
I <3 MxWeb.
