Quake for WebOS on the Palm Pre

The second SDL game for the Pre (1st being Doom) is now available for download in Preware. Unlike before, the Quake is now fully playable thanks to the hard work of developer Will Dietz. The control scheme is new and improved allowing for more on screen controls. According to the webOS-internals wiki: ImageQuake-pre

Controls were designed with the idea of JHBN forming a diamond and when thumb is on J at 45 degrees holding phone comfortably you should be able to reach all directional keys easily without the need to take thumb off the keyboard.

Red: Movement
J- Forward
B- Backwad
H- Strafe Left
M- Strafe Right
Blue: Turbo
I- Turbo Forward
U- Strafe Left
K- Strafe Right
Yellow: Weapons
Select Weapon by pressing corresponding number 1-8

More info in the video. Another video after the break.  Enjoy the game.

Quake Demoed on Pre

Hopefully this is just the first on many more to come. This morning, after hours of working past their bedtimes, webos-internals ported their second game to the Pre using the SDL library that Palm provided in the 1.3.5 update. Rumors have it that Will Dietz (dtzWill) was able to whip this port up in 4 hours. Then, the game was packaged up to be launchable from the Pre by Rod Whitby. While it’s still limited (a non-playable demo), the developer plans to keep working on it to make it playable. On the precentral forums, dtzWill says “The keybindings presently are the biggest issue, and it seems to be non-trivial (see sdldoom's keybinding situation).” Keep on, keepin’ on WebOS-internals.

p.s. Quake is available via Preware right now.

Jon Rubinstein named a “Geek of the Year”

Congratulations are in order for Mr.Jon Rubinstein, CEO of Palm, for being named one of the “Geeks of the Year” by The Fast Company.  He is joined on the list by the likes of Kudo Tsunoda (Xbox’s Project Natal), Jens Rasmussen and 0000000jon-rubinsteinLars Rasmussen (people behind Google Wave), and the founders of Twiiter and Facebook.  Certainly, he is deserving of this title. Coming from Apple to become the chairman of Palm, he had done an excellent job reinvigorating the company and product line. According to The Fast Company,  webOS is “the start of a line of products that is the best hope for reintroducing the geek masses to Palm”.  So, great job Ruby, and remember we mean geek in the kindest of ways. Oh yeah, while you’re at it, check out his Wikipedia page.

Hardware-Accelerated DOOM! Ported to Palm Pre

The folks over at WebOS-Internals have done it again, only this time they've outdone themselves. A fully functioning, hardware accelerated port of Doom is now available for anyone with WebOS version 1.3.5 to download and try for themselves. Installing the game is not for the faint hearted - you will need a rooted Pre. But, it isn’t particularly difficult if you follow our how-to or head over to the official forum thread. If you're comfortable using the command line and you'd like to give it a go, just follow the instructions pictured here. This is a great New Years Eve gift for the WebOS community - expect to see more hardware accelerated, 3D games coming soon to a Pre near you. Another video is posted after the break.

WebOS School Releases Catalog Viewer

WebOS School (that's the people who do free online WebOS courses) have recently released something new. It's called the Catalog View and it is essentially an online version of the App Catalog. Of course, you can't download apps but, it contains all the information that the on-device app catalog has. What's more, is that they have gone ahead and included the Most Downloaded and Newest Apps in an easy to navigate list. They have also included a pie chart which shows app distribution amongst categories and the ability to see the free/paid app breakdown as well as the total number of apps. There is also a search function that allows you to search for any app in the catalog. You should note that the statistics are an estimate and are based off the US App Catalog. Check it out here and let us know what you think.

Engadget App On The Way

A recent post over at Engadget.com talks of the  release of an Engadget app for the iPhone/iPod Touch, then goes on to assure a release of the app for Blackberry and WebOS. "We've got more apps on the way! Before CES (fingers crossed), you should see both a BlackBerry and webOS version of the Engadget application, and plans for the Android version are already in motion."

NFS App Catalogfindapps_2009-28-12_203348

Remember that leaked Need For Speed video that seemed too good to be true? Well, we do since here at The Mx Web we were almost sure it was fake. In fact, we even told you how we would have done it better. But we would like to recant what we had said. If you notice above, the screenshots from webOS 1.3.5 match the layout from the leaked NSF pictures. So, everyone mark January 7th on your calendars, hopefully Palm makes the announcement we have all been waiting for.

PopSci Rates Palm Pre in 100 Best Innovations of the Year

I was looking through my Popular Science magazine, and happen to glance at the 100 Best Innovations of the Year. And right next to the Zune HD was my favorite Palm Pre! Deemed as "a socially skilled phone," PopSci put this phone on the list because of its ability to "keep you connected" by merging names from various accounts complete with their updated Facebook photo, or as we like to call it Synergy. Another popular device in addition to the Zune HD was Microsoft's Project Natal, but the only cell phone on this list was the Palm Pre.

Engadget App Coming For WebOS

Engadget LogoWell isn't that nice. A site that already has well-developed mobile site decided they are going to make more user-friendly ways to access content on their website. Engadget announced at the Engadget Show that they are in the process of making and Engadget app for the iPhone, Android, and your own WebOS.

I’d assume they are basically making the content like videos accessible to the users since as of now their videos use flash and iPhone OS and WebOS can't currently support Flash. This app should be more streamlined and well-built since it comes from tech aficionados. They said these apps should be coming out before CES, so not much time left!
