App Review: Roll Quest

S
o the workers at The MxWeb were thinking of how to help out the loyal readers. So we thought, how about let them know about the paid apps that they could buy? Many people don't buy apps because they don't want to waste their money if it's a bad app. So here we bring you our first of many App Reviews: Roll Quest.

Initial Thoughts

First when I was looking through the App Catalog, I scrolled past Roll Quest because I looked at the app logo and thought it was just a basic text game. Boy was I wrong. I bought the game, and the main screen I see a setting for Easy and Hard levels. I think to myself, “Eh, let’s try easy to try this game out” I’m met with this kind of Aztec/Maya/Ancient Mesoamerican theme with a white cue ball and many other yellow balls. I thought this game would be easy. Just like pool, right? Kind of…

Gameplay

The way Under Clouds Games made Roll Quest is actually quite creative, but a bit easy (to me). I was expecting one of those bars that show how much power to use, with the power level quickly rising and decreasing, and you have to use your quick reflexes to get the right amount of power. The three levels that the game gives you are good, but I don’t really find a need for the middle one. All I need is the really powerful one (so I can get lucky and maybe get one in) and the soft one (for strategic pool playing). The hitting of the different marbles/balls is really smooth and there is no lag. I have one question here: Why crystals? I guess it kinda goes with the Mesoamerican theme, but something else could have been used.

Here’s the twist in this game: The Levels. Every level is a different shape with the crystals in different places. Now the original pool game just got a lot harder. The different angles that the outer boundaries shape make bunking the cue ball off a lot harder. The different crystal placements make the game unique, and very interesting. As far as I can see, there are dozens of levels (maybe hundreds) that will be very entertaining (and maybe frustrating) for the owner of phone.

There are only two levels in Roll Quest: Easy and Hard. The difference is that in Easy, all of the balls are the same color and can be sunk in any order. In Hard, each ball is a different color and they have to be sunk in a specific order in order to gain points. Now the very hard power level can be frustrating because sometimes the balls go in without you purposefully doing so, but you don’t get any points. This is where those hours of playing online Yahoo Pool comes in handy.

Though many aspects of this game are unique, scoring in this game is quite ordinary. Hitting the balls into the crystals gets you points, and getting them in a combo (in a row) gets you more points. Hitting multiples balls in with the same shot gets A LOT of points. There is a catch… Each shot you use without getting any balls in makes you lose points. Bummer. The scores are submitted online, and the highest score for that level appears on the screen before starting each level. The only complaint here is that there isn’t a full high score list (like Polar Bowling ;) ), only the top score is shown.

Value

This game by Under Clouds Games is well worth the $0.99 that they priced it at. It has a unique twist with good gameplay and it can provide hours of fun. Some other games in the app catalog are priced much higher by looking at ratings of other users, they aren’t very good. In this case, you get more than what you pay for.

Conclusion

Roll Quest is a game that is useful for time-wasting or just for the sake of playing games. Its theme and quality are so far unmatched in the webOS App Catalog. It’s nice to see some quality apps flowing into the Catalog. I can see that iPhone developers CAN actually make quality apps ;) Overall, this game is very fun and it should be a definite buy for people thinking this game.

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbour were preparing to do some research about that. We got a good book on that matter from our local library and most books where not as influensive as your information. I am very glad to see such information which I was searching for a long time.
