Upcoming Application: GeoStrings

Many of you are probably familiar with Music Player (Remix), the totally awesome remade, tweaked, and improved version of the built in music application by DanPLC. Luckily for us, DanPLC is back with a completely new idea. Meet: GeoStrings. The clever name comes from geo, latin for geography, and the string people put on their finger to remind them to do something. The application does what the  name implies: remind you to do tasks based on location. However, it does so much more. In the video preview, we can see many promising features, such as location groups. For example, you could make a location group with all the places you might buy DVD’s; Target, Walmart, Costco. Then, when you want to make a reminder to buy a DVD you just set the location group. Now, you can just close the application and forget about it. When your webOS phone senses that you are with a user-defined radius (another great feature) of any of the locations in your group, it will send you a pop up. This pop will be accompanied by your default notification sound. DanPLC explains this on the precentral forums:

When I first implemented the notifications, I wanted to implement its own unique sound; however after thinking about it some more I decided to go with the standard reminder "ding" (or vibrate when in silent mode). First of all, it keeps it consistent with other reminders that people receive on their phones. Secondly, the app respects the choice of the user (whether to have audible alerts or vibrate while in silent mode).

I have to say, I love to see this kind of consideration for users. This pop up is great because it utilizes the unobtrusive notification system in webOS. If you want you can acknowledge the reminder and swipe it off the screen, or you can ignore it and be alerted again in one minute. So, check out the the video above, check out the video after the break, and most importantly continue to support amazing developers like DanPLC who work hard to improve the webOS platform.

Some ways to use GeoStrings according to DanPLC:

There are many examples of GeoStrings other than buying merchandise. Off the top of my head, here are a few:

  • While at work setting a GeoString to remind yourself to record a TV show when you get home.
  • Setting a GeoString to drop by an old friend's house the next time you're in their neighborhood.
  • Setting a GeoString to remind you to drop by the library to read a new book that came out.
  • Set a GeoString to remember to stop by the florist on the way to your grandmother's house to pick up some flowers.
