As many WebOS enthusiasts know by now, someone leaked a video of a "Pre running Need For Speed." Now for those who don't understand the hype, the current implementation of the Pre has the GPU disabled. Additionally, native SDK support for this kind of graphics work is unavailable to the public. If this video was real (read on to see why it isn't) then it would mean a ton to gaming on the webOS platform. That being said, it's very reasonable to consider our doubts on this video. It's easy to play a prerecorded video of a Need For Speed game on the Pre and post a few screenshots of the app entry in the App Catalog. There's a substantial lack of proof such as a full video that involves installing the app, or maybe even just launching it from the Launcher app to prove it's an app. Click below to read the rest of this entry, with picture evidence.
Now before I start bashing the video, I would like to say that I would love to see this come to WebOS, but I can't bring myself to believe that this is true.
Here are just some things I noticed:
1. The buttons at the bottom of the App Catalog are opaque. In the live App Catalog, they are semi transparent.
2. The list-item divider that divides each App's listing in the App Catalog is gone below the Need For Speed entry.
3. The App Catalog backgrounds are colored differently.

1. In this zoomed picture we can see where the item-list divider would've been. You can see where there is a sharp change of color. It might be because of the lack of a list-item divider or incorrectly done Photoshop modification.
There are always going to be people who believe this Need For Speed evidence is true, and then there are those who don't. Believe what you will. I'm just here to present my side of the story.

Hoax for sure!
This screenshot could be from a version of the app catalog that is not public, and never will be public. I expect Palm has an internal app catalog for testing things. These artifacts may be the result of an older catalog that was never updated with the production graphics or something…
However, the missing divider is fishy…
This is the best you could come up with?
Why would he even have to remove the divider? Seriously man you need to check what your saying first. You do realize that internal Palm App Catalog may not look as pretty as ours or maybe it is a sign of things to come.
@edrompa
It is safe to assume that internally palm would be using a similar framework for their widgets. why do we see the buttons on the bottom of the screen having a different transparency? Also, lack of divider in the hoax screen shot contradicts itself so your point doesn’t really stand.
Notice how the bottom buttons are not transparent? It’s possible this app catalog has been photoshopped in more ways than one – he could have photoshopped the bottom portion of the screen to obscure the developer/publisher for NFS and just didnt bother with the bottom divider.
You also notice text for the app hiding at the very bottom of the screen edge… which on the app catalog.. the app will vanish if you scroll low enough for the divider line to fade away. as well as the difference between the hiding apps background color of the catalog vs the background color of the rest of the apps
Aside from the divider line, everything else matches what I see in my app catalog as far as the color and the opaque buttons. The buttons on mine are 100% opaque. For some strange reason I can only see the free apps too.
The video may (or may not be) be fake, but this “proof” is garbage.
Okay, interesting concept. Let us know when you have some real evidence. You’re probably one of those people who think NASA faked the moon landings too. Oh my, you can’t see any stars, it must be fake.
Nothing to see here. Move Along. Nothing to see.
Let me first say that I’m not defending the credibility of the original images (as long as the Pré isn’t available in the Netherlands I really don’t need to care whether this is real or not). However…I do find the posted argumentations as to why this is a hoax lacking.
One thing to keep in mind when ‘uncovering’ a shopped image, is, that – in general – the shopper will try to change as little as possible from the original image…because every change is a possible mistake. So any change beyond the scope of the hoax itself (in this case the existence of NFS for the Pré) would have to have a reason. The argumentation here why this is a hoax – however – is that he has changed too much that wasn’t necessary.
For example, there is no valid reason why the opacity of the lower buttons would have been changed by the shopper; except for one: it was too difficult to edit the company name behind transparent buttons. However, this reason makes no sense, because it would be easily solved by changing the location of the shopped entry to a different position.
Unless…the source material used in this hoax was already flawed (which would also explain why the background colour was changed); which could easily be proven if one found the source material.
One last thing: it probably took me less time than it took to write the above report, using only images available on the internet I created a (far from perfect) fake-image what addressed all arguments. Making the original ‘hoax’-image would have taken me more time.

Ps. As mentioned earlier, I’m not defending the original image, nor do I claim the NFS:Pré is (or isn’t) real. I am strictly focussing on the arguments given above; and why I believe them to be less than solid.
To people who say these are honest mistakes, how do you defend them? I think in a situation like this we must assume its fake until there is sufficient evidence that it true.
I’m skeptical, but this could also easily be real because there’s nothing to say that palm (or a subset of) employees can’t be running on an internal app store with some graphical differences.
Too little evidence to conclude one way or another, but would definitely love NFS on Pre.
Wow…
ok, I dont know about you all but MY app catolog looks more like the one that this guy is claiming to be fake(the one on the left)
1) My buttons on the bottom are NOT semi-transparent, they are opaque…
2) The divider line on my app catolog fades out exactly the way the picture on the left is…in fact, mine fades even quicker than that.
3 and most IMPORTANT) How will you compare screenshots and darkness/brightness & contrast. My screenshots of the app catalog are not as dark as the right-hand picture and not as bright as the left hand picture…
Therefore…my app catalog is fake.
My App catalog also does not have semi-transparent buttons
and the dividing lines also fade out like the supposed “fake” version.
Problem is, at the point the lines fade out, so does everything else
below that point, including and especially anything resembling
the “FREE” text which can see in the lower right corner of
the “fake” app catalog below the faded out line.
I don’t know if it’s fake or not, but it’s still not consistent
with any live app catalog.
I left a post at the bottom…but you’re way wrong, bro! I get the text on my Pre…and I’m assuming you have the same device that I do…so you get it as well. And, as I’ve stated below…the dividing line shows up only AFTER you’ve already opened an app for purchase or to check it out…then when you return to the menu, the buttons at the bottom become transparent(semi) and, lo and behold, a dividing line now appears. Why doesn’t anyone take the time out to check and emulate the “fake” app catalog pictures??
This is why the U.S. is going downhill…because the youth of today is lazy and take a cursory examination of EVERYTHING and calls it “in-depth analysis.” ARRRRGH!! Well…whatever. YOu people will believe whatever you want to believe…but at least take a closer look next time, ok??
Hmm, if those screenshots are fake, then I wonder what this is…
http://img687.imageshack.us/i/findapps.jpg/
some more photo evidence:
the original image (http://www.precentral.net/sites/precentral.net/files/articleimages/Derek%20Kessler/2009/11/new-app-catalog-1.jpg) had a small thumbnail, and a quick google-search provided the original source-image used (http://theportablegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/nfsiphone1.jpg). This – of course – is quite a big indication that the app catalog screenshot itself is fake.
I didn’t really want to read through everyones arguments cause I’m lazy and at work, so you all may have noticed this already,
But if you take a look at the app called Mosquitones at the top, the text has an obvious fade on it as it’s getting closer to the top. However, the icon for the app and the ‘$0.99′ price are not fading.
Don’t make no sense.
Here’s the thing… When you first open the App Catalog, and BEFORE you actually open an app to purchase….the buttons on the bottom ARE opaque NOT semi-transparent!!! Stupid!!
It’s only when you open an app to purchase or check it out…and then go back to the menu…THEN…AND ONLY THEN…do the buttons become semi-transparent!!
Same thing with the divider line.. There is NO FREAKIN’ DIVIDER LINE when you first open the App Catalog… Only after opening various apps to check them out does the divider line become apparent!!
Man!! You really need to check these things out man!! I’m not saying that it isn’t a fake…but if THAT’S your proof, my friend, you are way off base!! WAY WAY WAY OFF BASE!!!
Everyone…please go open your app catalogs and verify what I say is true!! My God…why are people so bad at investigating things?? It took me all of 1 minute to figure this out!! Un-freakin-believable!! Stupid, stupid people!!
Nice big hoax on the app catalog. You can check these links to see whats going on. Might want to recant your story.

Wow. Looks like you were dead wrong. Sometimes you can come up with a great explanation and still be completely wrong. A reasonable explanation isn’t proof; take a lesson from science.

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbour were preparing to do some research about that. We got a good book on that matter from our local library and most books where not as influensive as your information.
Hrmm that was weird, my comment got eaten. Anyway I wanted to say that it’s nice to know that someone else also mentioned this as I had trouble finding the same info elsewhere. This was the first place that told me the answer. Thanks.
Thank you for the sensible critique. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do some research about this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more from this post. I am very glad to see such great information being shared freely out there.
Amazing post! I initially found your blog a week or so ago, and I subscribed to your RSS feed the very same day. I have several cool ideas for some upcoming posts you could write. I’ll send you an email shortly. Keep up the great work.
You need to really think about building up this site into a major authority in this niche. You obviously have a solid grasp of the areas all of us are searching for on this site anyways and you could possibly even earn a buck or three from some offers. I would look into following recent news and raising the volume of write ups you make and I guarantee you’d start seeing some awesome traffic in the near future. Just an idea, good luck regardless!
Nice to be visiting your blog again, it has been months for me. Well this article that i’ve been waited for so long. I need this article to complete my assignment in the college, and it has same topic with your article. Thanks, great share.

This is such a great resource that you are providing and you impart it away for the benefit of free. I inclination seeing websites that catch on to the value of providing a trait resource for the sake of free. It is the old what goes approximately comes about routine. Did you acquired lots of links and I view lots of trackbacks??
Until we revive our historical economic value creation engine, we will continue to suffer the effects of an improperly balanced economy. Our only other hope is to catch a draft horse in the global race.
